The streaming service Max reverted to being called HBO Max starting July 9, 2025. The name change marks the end of the phase started in 2023 when the platform was renamed Max after the merger between Warner Media and Discovery Networks, creating Warner Bros. Discovery.
Now, with the companies separated, the HBO brand is being reinstated to reinforce the identity associated with the quality of its content, such as The Last of Us and The Gilded Age.
According to company executives, the transition will be automatic and will not require users to download a new app or change their settings. Profiles, preferences, and viewing history will be retained, and subscription plans remain priced the same: $9.99 (basic with ads), $16.99 (standard), and $20.99 (premium), all available monthly or annually.
Despite the name change, the catalog will not undergo significant changes for now. The removal of some content from channels like Food Network and TLC had already been happening prior to the new phase, but the platform assures that future projects, such as the Harry Potter series, remain confirmed.
The new strategy focuses on curating high-quality content rather than quantity, aiming to regain the prestige associated with the HBO brand.
